Career planning is preparing yourself for the possible careers in which you can gain the maximum benefit from and setting your mind into doing it. Although career planning was once done as the first step when going into the adult world, nowadays it’s done all the time, throughout a lifetime, because the economy and society change constantly and careers need to be advanced with those changes.
It begins with assessing your current situation, not just financially or at work, but your personal state of mind as well. Do you enjoy organizing things or working within a certain time period and leaving it there when you go home? Are you better at leading people or working alone? Do you prefer to be outside or inside? Do you have political, religious, or moral beliefs that compel you to get involved in a certain field? Anything, absolutely anything that truly inspires you can be made into a career. But first you have to identify what it is that inspires you and why.
Secondly, you have to figure out if you want to undertake a job that’s already clearly defined or try something different on your own. If you already have a job offer, think about where you want to go with it, set the ultimate goals and define how to reach them. Do your own research about career development and how far you can go from where you start.
Then, it’s time for you to venture out and get yourself into a suitable work environment, if you don’t already have a job waiting for you. As a starter, you can also take an internship or be a volunteer. Do further research by talking to those who have been in the field for a long time and read success stories. Seek the knowledge to become what you want to be. Find out the type of educational qualifications and experiences you need for it.
Career planning should have plans A, B, C and so on, because it’s good to have several contingency plans even if only one field truly interests you. But, the chances are you’ll find your niche and be interested in a single lifelong career path. Study for proper qualifications, keep some great interview outfits ready, get together a ‘companies to apply to’ list and start by looking for entry level posts. Always keep in mind that nothing is fixed, so you can change jobs and career anytime you feel the need to do so. It could be a year later or twenty years down the road. But, make sure you do your career planning accordingly every time.
