What is Structural and Geotechnical Engineering?
Structural engineering involves analysis and design of structures generally a part of all civil engineering systems. Geotechnical engineering includes design, analysis and construction of foundations for buildings and other structures such as earth dams, mining, tunnels for transportation facilities, water aqueducts, ground water development, resource exploration and evaluation, weather modification, engineering for natural hazards, and engineering in the ocean environment. We invoice every two weeks for work that has been completed previous to the billing date. A down payment is usually required prior to commencement of a project.
Can my cellar be converted?
Virtually any cellar or basement can be made habitable using modern waterproofing solutions and structural engineering techniquesOn fixed-price projects change orders occur when the owner requests a change in the scope of the work.
Do you subcontract some of the work?
We subcontract some of our specialised work ? structural steel works and waterproofing for example. This saves our clients time and money, since we could not possibly have the in-house expertise and equipment available from the best subcontractor specialists. But please note that we are able to work very closely and efficiently with our subcontractors, since most have been associated with us for many years and have become part of our extended “family”.We aim to encourage learning through problem solving exercises.
What kind of work do you prefer?
We prefer well-designed projects located within our current core work area of the Eastern Province. But the most important criterion for the success of a project is the people involved. We always prefer working with discerning and responsive clients. Our in-house capabilities include design. We have a talented design staff skilled in the design of any type of project we build, including civil construction, infrastructural utility works, remodelling projects, offices, villas, residential complexes, warehouses and reinforced concrete structures.
What is the teaching style at UCL?
We aim to encourage learning through problem solving exercises. As part of the 2006 changes we are attempting to break down the barriers between the existing civil engineering disciplines such as structural engineering / fluid mechanics and trying to place civil and environmental engineering in a broader context. On fixed-price projects change orders occur when the owner requests a change in the scope of the work. We use our programme control and accounting system to generate a written change order for each change, which must then be approved in writing by the owner before it becomes binding. On Time & Materials jobs, we sometimes use “change orders,” but often we simply revise the budget periodically to reflect any changes that have occurred since the last budget revision.
What is the “negotiated” contract process?
A “negotiated” contract means that from the outset we work with the owner to develop a project. On larger projects, we work very closely with the architect or designer as well. After an initial telephone conversation, an appointment is made to view the project.
