Many people love Astronomy.  Some of these are professionals who work in observatories.  Others are merely hobbyists who enjoy it.  Some of these hobbyists have even made important discoveries at times.  It used to be that astronomy required a telescope or at least binoculars.  Today however, computers make it possible to practice astronomy without them thanks to astronomy software.  This is a discussion of just some of the available software.

SETI@Home home is very popular.  the point of this software was to use all the idle time on peoples home computers.  The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence was set to search space for radio signals that indicated intelligent design.  the data were analyzed with supercomputers.  But now all that computing power is distributed online.  There won’t be some kind of alert if intelligent life is found.  But people can take pride in being involved in the search for intelligence outside our home planet.

A 3-D screen saver is another type of astronomy software.  With this software during idle time your computer can show vivid 3D worlds.  This can be as simple as an image or an actual 3D representation you can navigate.  A search engine like Google can help you locate one of these programs.

Not many people know what F.I.T.S is.  It’s a data standard called flexible image transport system that delivers spatial data and multidimensional arrays.  It’s used in a lot of software.  there’s freeware such as FITSview and professional programs like AstroArt.  A web search will find many more.  Some are listed at Duke University’s web site.

Amateur astronomers can even find help with imperfect telescopes.  The software displays images that help the hobbyist adjust the telescope.

Astronomy software is as varied as the universe.  Web search for it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
