It’s used in a lot of software. there’s freeware such as FITSview and professional programs like AstroArt. A web search will find many more. Some are listed at Duke University’s web site.
Amateur astronomers can even find help with imperfect telescopes. The software displays images that help the hobbyist adjust the telescope.
