Do Not Overlook Institutional Scholarships When Looking For College Funding

When most people think about student scholarships they tend to think of scholarships as being awarded by large academic bodies and major companies and these are without question extremely good sources of money. But, they also carry one major problem and that is that competition is fierce with tens of thousands of applications being submitted from all across the country. It might be a in your cap to get one of these scholarships but your chances of doing so are almost as good as they are of winning the lottery.
For the majority of students a better alternative is to look for an institutional scholarship.
Almost all colleges will award at least one institutional (in-house) scholarship annually and many of the bigger colleges will award more than one, generally having scholarships available within each department of the college. This means that, if you are enrolled at one of the bigger colleges you might be eligible to apply for a number of scholarships within your own institution.
Although institutional scholarships have been around for a long time, surprisingly enough a fairly low percentage of students tend to apply for them when compared to the well publicized and better known nationwide scholarship programs. One important thing to note here is that most of these scholarships will not cover the total cost of attending college and a large number will be limited to cover just tuition fees, or to cover just housing costs. Nonetheless, the money available is normally substantial and they can certainly help a great deal when it comes to paying your bills.
A lot of the larger colleges will also have departments that are dedicated solely to providing financial aid for students, including scholarships, and can let you have details of just what scholarships are available and how you can apply for them. This can be an excellent place to start as you can obtain a lot of information to point you in the right direction and help to make sure that you get your application in on time. You will also find that a lot of colleges have websites that also provide a lot of information about scholarships, together with details of how to apply.
If you are familiar with the application procedure for nationwide scholarships, you will find that the process for institutional scholarships is in effect the same. Every scholarship will however have its own particular requirements and so you will need to ensure that you read through these with care and follow the instructions to the letter. Also, check carefully to make sure that you are eligible for any scholarship before submitting your application. Almost all scholarships will have a list of eligibility criteria which you must meet before putting in an application and, if you are uncertain, you should ask the awarding body for advice.
One benefit of institutional scholarships is that, because there is lower competition, you do not generally have to wait very long before you find out whether or not your application has been successful. Another benefit (which may not feel like a benefit) is that, if you are unsuccessful, you will nevertheless have gained valuable experience of the college’s application process and will therefore be in a better position when it comes to making a further application in subsequent years.
Just before leaving the subject of scholarships for college students it should be noted that these are only one alternative to the better known national scholarship programs. There are however many other sources of scholarship funding, not the least of which are the much overlooked credit union college scholarships.
