French is the official or co-official language of 26 countries. Four of them are in Europe: France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Luxembourg. Two are in the Americas: Canada and Haiti. There are also two overseas departments of France: Martinique and Guadeloupe. The rest are former French colonies in Africa and in the islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. French is a major second language in Arabic-speaking Algeria, Tunis, and Morocco. World-wide, it is spoken in 53 countries, making it one of the most wide-spread languages of the world.

 

What is the best way to learn French? The best way to learn French is the same way to learn any language. First you need to get your tools. Get a grammar textbook preferably with vocabulary, a two-way dictionary, a phrasebook, a newspaper or book in French, and a notebook, pen, etc. These are just the basics, but you can supplement them with other materials such as software, audio programs, pronunciation guides, or other books with practice exercises.

Learning of any foreign language, especially French can be divided into various steps starting from basics to more advanced phrases. You basics will start with numbers and alphabets. Once you have done the basic exercises on these, next on the agenda will be to learn words used for greeting, shopping, banking, etc. Other critical area associated with French words will be to able to read and recognize animals, flowers, modes of transport, parts of body, months of the year, days in a week, etc. You will then be exposed to composition aspect of French language.

Online French Lessons: In addition to your current program on how to learn French, you can use online French lessons to build vocabulary, improve grammar and pronunciation and work on lessons for verbs. There is a lot of free information that lack creativity that isn’t geared towards people who have a hard time learning French or aren’t sure how to learn French.
