Japanese is a language spoken by over 130 million people in Japan and in Japanese emigrant communities. It is related to the Ryukyuan languages. There may have some relationships with other languages, but they have still remained undemonstrated. It is an agglutinative language and is distinguished by a complex system of honorifics reflecting the hierarchical nature of Japanese society, with verb forms and particular vocabulary to indicate the relative status of speaker, listener and the third person mentioned in conversation whether he is there or not. The sound inventory of Japanese is relatively small, and it has a lexically distinct pitch-accent system. It is a more-timed language.
There are two basic methods of learning to speak Japanese – immersion and association.
Immersion consists of immersing yourself in Japanese culture. You learn the language by going to Japan or entering a Japanese classroom. You learn to speak by hearing the language spoken. Gradually, you pick up meanings of words from context clues, physical actions, etc. Essentially, you learn the language in the same manner that a native speaker did as a child. Immersion is an excellent way to learn a language thoroughly, if you have plenty of time to invest to do so.
Association is another way to study Japanese. Learning Japanese by association consists of designing a method, or purchasing a method, to help you to associate Japanese words with their pronunciation and English meaning. You essentially begin by translating English words to Japanese words in your mind, and then learn to string them together into coherent sentences. This is a great way to pick up spoken Japanese quickly. For example, if you have a business trip to Japan, association is a good way to learn key Japanese phrases that you’ll need to know.

Perhaps the best ways to learn Japanese are to speak and read it. Joining a few tutorials and following the lessons alone will not help, and even if they do, you will not learn the proper accent. This will be something like learning English from the books alone, without interacting with anybody else.
Studying Japanese can also help you learn more about your own language and culture. As you learn to speak Japanese, you’ll naturally compare its grammar and language structure to that of your native language. As you do so, you’ll learn things that you never realized. Japanese is different from all western languages, both in content and form. Learning Japanese is a whole new experience, and one you’ll be glad you had!
Once you gain the competence in Japanese, you will open up many personal and business related opportunities. For example, the U.S.A. does more business with Japan than any other country. You will be a valuable employee if you speak the language of the customer. Japanese is among the top 10 languages on Earth and spoken by over 130 million people. “Speaks Japanese” looks great on a resume or curriculum vitae, no matter what your line of work. In Japan especially, language has been grooved by culture. So as you study Japanese you also discover and learn more about their wonderful culture. Stepping outside your own culture and language will give you a fresh, new perspective. In addition, Japan has lots of great music that can be appreciated so much more because you can now understand it.
