Kiwis, Maoris, All Blacks; these are the first words that would usually come to mind when you mention the name New Zealand. New Zealand is a country full of culture and heritage attributed by its rich history. The Moaris were the first settlers to arrive in New Zealand and were then followed by European explorers. New Zealand was first discovered by Abel Tasman of the Netherlands in 1640.
The British people then started immigrating to New Zealand from 1840 up until the 1970s and have become the majority in population in terms of immigrants. The British then made New Zealand a colony and later on a Dominion.
New Zealand is now known as a cultural melting pot as more and more immigrants are settling in this land full of promise and beauty. Today it has a diverse population consisting of other ethnic groups from Samoa, Cook Islands, Tonga, and from Asia.).
New Zealand’s population is dominated by Europeans which constitute almost 70% of the total population. The rest are Maoris (7.9%), Pacific Islanders (4.4 %), Asians (5.7%) and others. Also, one-third of New Zealand’s population is not affiliated with any religion. Of those affiliated 1% of the people is Baptist, Pentecostal (2%), Methodist (3%), Presbyterian (11%), Roman Catholic (12%), Angelican (15%) and Other Catholic comprises 9% of the population. The current estimated population is New Zealand today is at 4,276,420 of which about 14% of them or one in every seven New Zealanders identify themselves as ethnically Maori.
Today, the people of New Zealand are largely sophisticated and highly educated urban dwellers. Members of a unique and vibrant multicultural society, New Zealanders are embracing 21st century technology and culture in record numbers. But New Zealanders also have a background of self-reliance, rugged individualism, with a famous “kiwi ingenuity” and a genius for invention — qualities still evident in the population today.
