Professional home staging career may look really tempting. No long university education is necessary, and you can be your own boss with your own time management and income limited only by your own limits. If you decide to become a stager, the administrative part is not too complicated. You just have to get a diploma from a staging course so that you have something to present yourself to your clients. You can usually use some of the furniture rental services, so you only need a small capital for the beginning. And then the most crucial thing is your real abilities. But first, you have to know what home staging means.
It may look like home staging means the same as home decoration, but that is NOT true! When you are decorating, you adjust the client’s home to suit his/her personality the best. On the contrary, home stagers should make the client’s personality indiscernible in the home. You don’t know who the prospective buyer will be – young professional? Retired couple? A student of philosophy? The goal is that you present the opportunities the property offers, but still leave some space for the buyer’s own imagination.
A great visual imagination, creativity, but also the empathy towards all sorts of customers - those are the “must have’s” of a good house staging professional. You will arrange dozens pieces of furniture, art and decoration into one meaningful composition. You naturally need to have is the proper eye for detail, which will tell you whether a combination of a candle, a bowl of fruits or a book with a pair of glasses will point out or destroy the specific atmosphere of the place. Every property has its own pluses and minuses, calling for pointing out or suppressing.
First you will need to get some experience. Try it with your home, your parents’ home, your son’s apartment and always ask for opinions. And as soon as you get enough confidence, start on the open market! For a start, contact some real estate agents in your region and leave some of your business cards with them. Get some newspaper adverts to check for some furniture rental stores around your neighbourhood. Difficult days, weeks and months will begin. However, if you manage to hold on and keep up consistent quality of your work, you will soon get some referrals and this will help you further. Don’t give up, just go on and your creativity and determination will for sure be paid for in the business.
